This is the VOA Special English Development Report.

World No Tobacco Day is celebrated each thirty-first of May. The observance is meant to bring attention to the growing use of tobacco and its deadly effects. The World Health Assembly established the event in nineteen eighty-seven. This year, special attention is being given to the harmful effects of tobacco marketing to women and girls.

The World Health Organization says tobacco kills nearly five and a half million people a year — another victim every six seconds. Tobacco use is a top cause of death worldwide.

One billion people smoke. More than eighty percent of tobacco users live in low and middle income countries.

The W.H.O. says the tobacco industry has increasingly directed its marketing campaigns at women and girls. Women currently represent about twenty percent of smokers. But tobacco use among girls is increasing.

Data collected from one hundred fifty-one countries show that about seven percent of young girls now smoke. That compares with twelve percent of boys. In some countries, however, the rates are almost equal.

Almost one hundred seventy countries have signed a treaty called the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The W.H.O. is calling on those governments to ban tobacco advertising to the fullest extent possible and to do more to protect women.

The agreement seeks to reduce the demand and supply of tobacco products. This year marks the fifth anniversary since the treaty went into effect.

Eighty percent of the signers have banned the sale of tobacco products to young people. Seventy percent have required health warnings on tobacco products.

The W.H.O. estimates that tobacco use caused one hundred million deaths in the twentieth century. If current rates continue, that number could reach one billion in this century.

Events are planned in a number of countries to mark World No Tobacco Day. Many of the events are aimed at persuading people, especially the young, not to start smoking. Others aim to educate people about the many health benefits of quitting.

And that’s the VOA Special English Development Report, written by June Simms. We have a link to a list of activities for World No Tobacco Day on our website, voaspecialenglish.com. Tobaco is a very harmful product which popularly appears in the form of cigarettes. A lot of peopel are using them as a kind of food everyday and they say that, it is very difficult, even unable, for them to give up smoking. Almost the countries in the world now have activities, policies to reduce the amount of smokers. However, it is still increasing. There are many reasons for this stage. One of them is that, people have been familiar with smoking for thousands year and they take them for granted. Another reason is the financial benefit of cigarettes is very big that businessmen is attracted to invest in this industry and goverments don’t want to loose the tax from it. Therefore, the fight to eradicate can not be completed in one or ten years but in centuries. For a world of no smoking, of no disease, we need to protect ourselve by taking part in the activities against smoking. Especially, teenagers who haven’t started smoking should not do this. Smoking is not a habit of modern life.

Tobacco is bad for the health of not only the smokers but also others.First of all, because of smoking , a large number of smokers get some kinds of diseases related to lungs such as cancer and tuberculosis.as a result, Every year there are are many people who are out of breath because of these diseases. For example, it is said that there are about one million cases died of lungs cancer in China which has the biggest population in the world. One more example is the statistic of Vietnam which is about 30000 each year. Last but not least, it is proved that smoke from smoking tobacco extremely affects the people living around, especially children. It is thought that though smokers appear to be the ones who directly smoke, the smoke influences others’ health than theirs. Moreover, if there are babies in home and there is smoking from tobacco, the babies easily get some diseases in terms of lungs and even brain, the most dangerous thing. This is because the ability of their bodies against diseases is still weak. In general, smoking is really harmful to our health. it is recommended that we should stop smoking as soon as possible. there should be serious banded laws toward smoking and the tax for tobacco needs increasing internationally so that the number of smokers drops.

why people smoke ? I think we should aim mainly cause to get out the way help them give up smoke. People smoke for many reasons, one of the most important reason is that they wanna show their pesonality although they know Cigarretes are harmful for their health. When you are with a group friend and they offer you smoke, you are hard to say refuse for an example. So, I agree totally that first of all it should have many plans educate everyone don’t start smoke better persude they give up smoking after smoked them.
