This is the VOA Special English Education Report.

The Program for International Student Assessment, or PISA, is a two-hour test that compares the performance of fifteen-year-olds. In the latest test, the countries with the best readers were South Korea and Finland. But students in Shanghai, China, scored the highest of all in reading, mathematics and science.

The next strongest results were in Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada, New Zealand and Japan.

In all, around half a million students in more than seventy economies took the test last year. The test has been given every three years since two thousand. Last year was the first time Shanghai took part.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development just released the results. Andreas Schleicher is director of the Education Indicators and Analysis Division at the OECD.

ANDREAS SCHLEICHER: “Asian countries value education more than other countries. They have given education a priority. Every child, every teacher, every parent knows that education is the gateway to success.”

Mr. Schleicher says other education systems can learn from Shanghai. For example, he says education spending in the province has increased, including teacher pay and training. And administrators are putting teachers into challenging classroom situations to make them better at their jobs.

ANDREAS SCHLEICHER: “They are pairing great with poorer schools in a way that is very systematic and very much focused on improving results.”

In the PISA scoring system, Shanghai scored six hundred in math. By comparison, the United States scored four hundred eighty-seven.

Shanghai’s reading average was five hundred fifty-six. American fifteen-year-olds scored five hundred, the same as in Iceland and Poland.

In science, Finland was second behind Shanghai. The United States was twenty-third.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan says the results show an urgent need for Americans to do more to remain competitive in the world economy. He points out that the United States has fallen from first to ninth place in college graduation rates because of gains by other countries.

Mr. Schleicher says international testing experts have investigated and confirmed the Shanghai scores. He says the PISA results are not representative of all of China. But he also says they dispute the common belief that Chinese education is centered on repetition and memorization.

Twenty-five percent of the Shanghai students showed advanced thinking skills to solve difficult math problems. The OECD average was three percent.

And that’s the VOA Special English Education Report, by Lawan Davis and Ira Mellman. For a link to the results, go to voaspecialenglish.com. I’m Steve Ember.

China has one ancient culture that was one of four ancient civilizations in the world, They are people industrious and hard at work, they accumulated much experience and skills in their labor although their life is not very hight standard.
Results of students in Shanhai scored highest in some subjects – Congratulate them.
Vietnam also have student teams achieved high award in some international competitions, but that has not been a domestic foundation of education and training now. That is difficult problems to improve and raise qualification of teachers and learning of students.
To do so, must not run under achievement and really strive struggling to reduce corruption in all aspects in society.

Development of China made a strong impression on me. It is a populated country and one of four ancient civilizations in the world.they were dramatic invention such as explosive, compass, paper…. especially, China put a satellite into orbit. this is a success in science and technology of China.
china has impressed the World of unexpected booming.the good in character of the Chinese and state management move up the world. but i don’t like the way china’s dealer, it is very mischievous. because of profit they can do everything defy health of people, particular products such as milk, fruit, toys.
    i has opinion like TTTT

The result was so amazing! The US wasn’t in the strongest result. My teacher said that the education systems which were in Asian countries were very good, especially in South Korea, Japan, China,…but when I listened this report, I released that they were better than I thought. Mr. Schleicher said the common belief that Chinese education is centered on repetition and memorization. I think that a reason for rapid development of Chinese economy. As you know, Chinese products have making up a major percent of market in over the world. Although the quality of these products are not good, we can’t deny creation and memorization of Chinese people.
If we compare the education system between Vietnamese system and other system in Asia, it is the big gap. I hope our country will have a better education system in the near future.

In my opinion, I think that Vietnamese students are labourious and intelligent more than those in other countries. Most of our students want to go abroad, especially to America to study at higher levels. We must admit that Westen Universities and colleges have good training programmes, provide with advanced conditions and active studying methods which help students progress clearly about evrery side. Our country is still poor, lack of everthing and good professors. Having a look at the education of the Southeast Asean countries, their education is much better than ours. What have we to do to keep pace with their progress? This requires powerful attempts from Goverment to every citizen to improve our education. I believe we will succeed and have advanced education compared to other countries in the region.

What about the rest of China?? How come Chinese elite students still want to attend US colleges? A lot of resources and competitions have been allocated to Shanghai, a model economic center of China. The tricky part is how are they going to mirror that to other parts of China.
As for VN, I believe the educational system must undergo a transformation process (curriculum/ learning-technology, teacching quality and result-oriented), which must be accompanied by a modest increase in creation/ distribution of wealth (teachers & student’s welfare be met), to make the neccessary systematic leap. It could be started out with pilot programs in more developed regions
